From the Editor

Christmas is fast approaching and everyone is readying for the holiday season. Many Indians living abroad are planning their visit to India. In this season of celebration and giving, everyone is out buying gifts for friends and family members.

A beautiful practice, #GivingTuesday, started last year in the internet world. GivingTuesday is the global day of giving back to the community. This year it falls on 3rd of December. On this day, people around the world contribute to bring about a change in their communities by supporting NGOs. The generosity of the holiday season is translated into committed action by organizations and individuals.

Many organizations across globe are participating on this day. GlobalGiving and Microsoft have come together to come up with a fabulous offer - Microsoft will match total donations made on GlobalGiving platform upto $250,000 !

Isha Vidhya have been recently accredited by Global Giving. Global Giving has partnered with Microsoft for a #GivingTuesday campaign.  Any donations between $10 and $1000 made at  http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/ishavidhya between Dec 3rd 12:01 PM (noon) EST (Dec 3rd 22:31 PM India Standard Time) and Dec 4th 11:59 AM EST (December 4th 22:29 PM India Standard Time) will be matched by Microsoft 100% subject to a maximum of $250,000 matching limit.  Please make your donations in the specified time period based on your local time zone as soon as the campaign time starts

Feature: Book Drive in Malaysia
When a shipment of 92 boxes of books arrive, we are overwhelmed with emotions. The books were contributed and collected by Isha volunteers from Malaysia in a book drive inspired by Ragini, who had run a successful book drive in Singapore in 2012.

A Malaysian volunteer (she wants to remain unnamed) started the book drive after she heard the story of an extremely poor family who saved money for ONE whole month to buy a book for Isha Vidhya school library. They did so because they saw the benefit of education that their child was receiving and they wanted to contribute something from their end.

The volunteer reached out to all in her mailing list through email and also put up the same notice on her personal blog. Her family and friends wholeheartedly supported the drive and forwarded the email to their contacts. The drive zoomed when people posted information about it on their facebook page.

The drive received tremendous response. Strangers started calling her with offers to contribute books. For six month she went around collecting books from people who had offered to donate, sometimes driving to other stated too. Many people donated cash which were used to buy more books.

Some of contributors we have the permission to mention are – Inner Wheel Society of KL (donated literary sets), a publisher from PJ (2000 workbooks), Isha Singapore meditator Shyamsunder, Isha Penang meditator Nadesh, Satheesh from M/s Triton Logistics and Maritime Pvt Ltd Chennai who helped with shipping, Suresh who helped with custom clearance in Chennai and Dazzie for sponsoring the entire shipping cost.

We cannot express enough gratitude for this overwhelming gesture. Isha Vidhya students love these books and will always cherish them. Thank you!

Run a Book Drive: Books open up new world to our children.

Rural kids receive little stimulation, either from family or environment. Most students have not gone beyond their village and heard vaguely of Chennai, US or Delhi. Yes, for them US, which is a country, is almost same thing as Chennai, a city!

Internet, which we take for granted in cities, is almost inaccessible to them due to lack of equipment and high cost. Books and comics are one medium through which they get know about a world beyond their village.

Singapore school student ran a successful book drive for us. So did Malaysian supporters. We hope you too will choose to run one – in your school, office, neighbourhood or family. We accept all books which are appropriate for school children – Encyclopaedias, travel books, reference books, children’s magazines, comics, fiction, biographies and workbooks.

You can collect books, both used and new, or get people to sponsor books. The books need to be in English or Tamil but can be on any topic or subject. Our only request is to ensure that the books are in good condition so that the students take pride in handling them.

If you want to start a book drive or have books that you can donate (and transport to Coimbatore/Chennai) please contact us at asmita.sinha@ishavidhya.org.

*The registration process will take less than a minute.

Critical requirements: We are barely 6 months away from the May 2014 deadline of having 34 additional classrooms to accommodate the students who will join in the academic year 2014 – 2015. Toilet blocks are also needed to service the increase in students in each school.

Construction of classrooms and toilet blocks ensure possibility of education for several generation of students. It is a debt that we pay to the society for having supported us in our education path. We invite corporates and individuals to help us create this infrastructure for the section of society that was left behind in India's growth as a nation.

The cost of building classrooms and toilet blocks is one major infrastructure expenditure in our total expenses. We hope you will help us reach out to all who believe quality education can bring positive changes in the society.
