Social Science Quiz:
The function of education is to learn to think critically and analytically, build character and attitudes and to combine those with the developing of intelligence. Based on this understanding of education, a Social Science quiz competition was conducted for the 6th to 9th standard students of the Vanavasi School.

Initially, the quiz competition was held class by class. Winning students from each class were selected for the final competition. The students were divided into four groups, namely Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati and Cauvery. Each group was assigned a teacher, who led the group in preparing for the finals.

The final contest started by reading out the rules and regulations. Questions were selected from subjects like History, Geography, Civics, Politics, General Knowledge, Sports and Current Affairs. Eight rounds of direct questions were asked of each team. If a team was unable to answer correctly, the question was passed to the next team and it was awarded the points, if the question was answered correctly.

After tallying the points, the winner with the most points was team “Yamuna” followed by team “Ganga”. The winners were awarded prizes by the Vice Principal.

Congratulations to the winners and all the participants!
Field Trip:
Eighth and ninth std students were taken for a field trip to see the Sterlite, a copper wire factory, Ramesh Flower, a fresh flower supplier, and to the beach.

The day started with a visit to Sterlite Industries, the largest non-ferrous metals and mining company in India. The Tuticorin complex houses a smelter, a refinery, a phosphoric acid plant, a sulphuric acid plant and a copper rod plant. The students were first taken to the meeting hall where they heard about the process of making copper and then they were taken around the campus to see it being made. Staff members patiently answered questions posed by the students.

The next stop was the Ramesh Flower complex. Even before they entered the building, the students were greeted by the perfume of flowers. The students saw the packing process of the flowers for long distance distribution, the storage godown and finally, the process of bleaching and coloring the natural and waste material which is used in bouquets, along with flowers. The students were also allowed to collect some of the accessories used to create bouquets.

Finally the students went to the beach where they played in the sea under the supervision of the teachers. They also visited a nearby park to play on the swings and slides.

The trip was a welcome break from classroom learning.
