The World at Isha Vidhya
Educating Rural India October 2014
Grandparents' Day
From the Editor
Winters are a great time to host City Marathons in India. The weather is perfect with the cool temperature attracting many more participants. Supporters from Delhi, Chennai, Cuddalore and other cities are participating in Marathons to raise funds for Isha Vidhya. They also bring forth amazing stories of human effort, one of which is that of P. Manoharan.

P. Manoharan, a 75 year old veteran, will be running the 21 km in the Chennai Marathon for Isha Vidhya! A diabetic since the age of 60, he has been running in several competitions. Notable achievements include the 7th place in Chennai Marathon 2013, 1st place in 1500m run at Erode 2012 Championship and 1st place in 10 km run in the Tamil Nadu Masters Athletic Championship.

He continues to participate in running competitions in different cities and does not tire even after a 21 km run. P. Manoharan is an inspiration to all the Chennai runners to don their shoes and hit the road. We salute his spirit and hope that more people will take up this inexpensive sport to keep fit, even as they help causes they believe in.

Art for Education, by Sumedha Gupta
Sumedha Gupta, a young artist from Saratoga, exhibited her paintings to raise funds for Isha Vidhya. In the auction she raised about $4000! We bring Sumedha's sharing in her own words:

On November 16, 2014, I held an art exhibition to display around 31 paintings. I have been helping children obtain a better education by volunteering at different schools but this time my aim was to help underprivileged children. When I was in India, I had seen young girls working to earn rather than going to school. This had disturbed me. So this was my chance to contribute towards their education.

I started planning for the auction earlier this summer when someone proposed the idea of using my art to raise funds. I needed to make as many paintings as possible, without compromising on their quality, to make maximum use of the event. I would paint as much as I could, including Saturdays and Sundays. It was stressful at times because I also had to take care of school work and college applications.

As the event got closer and closer, I had so many paintings to finish but I also had a fear - “Would people like my paintings? Will they support by donating?” But when the event came, I was truly surprised. People came continuously for six hours and looked at all the work that I had done. I was especially excited when people came up to me during the event and talked about techniques used in the paintings and methods I employed to get certain texture. I was pleasantly surprised to see the number of bidders for the paintings and felt a sense of accomplishment at the amount raised during the auction.

Next year, during the summer, my goal is to visit Isha Vidhya school and spend as much time as I can with the students.

Impact Story

Several children have been studying at Isha Vidhya since 2006. We are confident that we have made a difference in their life beyond teaching them science or maths. Their story, the impact of Isha Vidhya, needs to be documented and we are looking towards you to help us do it.

We hope you can spare couple of days to interview our students, teachers and their parents. This is an onsite volunteering option as you will need to be stationed near any of our schools. Drop us a mail at asmita.sinha@ishavidhya.org to indicate your availability for the program. We have many ideas but not enough hands to execute them. Join us, Today!
We have several other volunteering opportunities too. To know about them, please register* as a Friend of Isha Vidhya.

*The registration process will take less than a minute.
Donations and Investments
Critical requirements:

We have almost completed three quarters of the academic year. The 10th Standard students are preparing for their board exams and looking forward to a bright future. 11th and 12th Standard will be crucial for these students.

An intrinsic promise is made to each student, at the time of admission, that we will ensure quality education till end of schooling. We urgently need to build classrooms, labs and toilet blocks to cater to the senior secondary classes.

Support us in building these classrooms by connecting us with organizations, which want to donate towards education of underprivileged children. These classrooms will provide education to thousands of children for decades to come. Mail us at prabhu.loganathan@ishavidhya.org for more information or partnering.
