We learn best when we are having fun. Isha Vidhya teachers go by this simple rule to design lesson plans with activities that will interest students and make them shed their fears and inhibitions. One such experiment was conducted at Dharmapuri school.

The teachers requested the school to play “Sounds of Isha” music during lunch time. This music is very peppy so less inhibited students responded by dancing to it. Their sense of fun drew the quieter students into their fold and they also started participating in the impromptu dance time. Seeing the cute little KG kids dancing, the senior students joined them in the fun.

The teachers have reported many positive outcome of this exercise. The timid students who never used to speak a word, have opened up and started talking to other students. Those who used to cry while coming to school, no longer do so. The learning ability of the students have improved and most importantly, the school has a fun atmosphere. Students love to come to school and learn as the fear about it has reduced tremendously. Kudos to teachers for coming up with such a simple, executable idea!
Feature: Priya Vaidyanathan's tryst with devotion
Priya Vaidyanathan is a runner and an adventurer. She continuously challenges herself by setting new goals like trekking to Everest Base Camp. Recently she ran the 100 km long UltraMarathon in Nilgiris.

When Priya decided to compete in the Ultra marathon, she combined her love for running with her longstanding support to Isha Vidhya. She asked people to donate to Isha Vidhya as a means of motivating her. Throughout the Run, in the course of which she even encountered a snake and a leopard on the forest roads, among other challenges, she did not lose sight of the desire to send underprivileged children to a school where they could work on their own dreams.

It is a measure of the goodwill that she enjoys with her friends and family that she managed to raise over $3000! On being congratulated for this feat, she modestly brushes them away reminding us of David McCullough Jr.'s quote “Climb the mountain so that you can see the world, not so the world can see you.”

Priya is back to training, working on another goal. She, along with seven other divas, are trekking to base of Mt. Annapurna, 10th highest mountain. She is again raising funds for Isha Vidhya while attempting this new adventure. You can motivate her while supporting her cause at Give Isha page.

Book Drive: Run a book drive in your neighbourhood or workplace. Rural children, who do not have access to reading material at home or financial means to purchase books, love to pour over library books. Books which are lying idle at homes get a new lease of life when they reach our school libraries.

Translators: We are in urgent need of people who can translate content from English to Tamil and English to Telugu. The content is school related - training material, class material etc.

Virtual School: Volunteering just got a lot easier with this new initiative kick started by Isha Vidhya. If you are computer literate, interested in academics and would like to help out from your own home, get in touch with us.

For further details please contact Asmita at asmita.sinha@ishavidhya.org.
