Educating Rural India January 2015

School midday meal goes Organic
With the help of a few committed volunteers, kitchen gardens were started in all Isha Vidhya schools. The main purpose is to grow fruits and vegetables, which are used in our school kitchens, organically. Kitchen and garden waste is turned into vermipost, which is used to fertilize the garden.

The quality of food that we consume has a massive impact on our health and ability to fight diseases. Majority of our students come from such financially weak backgrounds that they are not able to afford two square meals a day. A nutritious, well-balanced midday meal at school is the only way to reduce malnutrition level in these children. Organic vegetables and greens are used to prepare healthy midday meals in our school kitchens.

We use native methods of farming, using locally available material to keep the garden pest free. Students are encouraged to work in the kitchen garden during environmental class activities, thus forging a relationship with plant life and also learning organic methods of growing crops. Parents and volunteers contribute to the initiative by way of donating seeds and saplings.

In February, many of the trees which had been planted couple of years ago, and vegetable plants sowed few months ago, started yielding results. Erode school harvested a bumper crop of gooseberry, some of which they kept for their own consumption and the rest were sent to Vanavasi and Dharmapuri schools for their kitchens.

With this crop of organic fruit, gooseberry rice with green leaves chutney was served to kids.

Our school coordinators have made an extra effort to learn about properties of locally grown produce, and how they can be used them intelligently to create nutritious, delicious food items that can address the health concerns of our students.

Leads to Corporate CSR teams
Several corporates are mandated by law to contribute a percentage of their earning towards society as part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). We would like to partner with them to provide quality education to maximum number of underprivileged rural children.

We would like to expand beyond our 9 schools and the (current) 40 schools under Government School Adoption Program (GSAP). We need funds to recruit more school coordinators to meet the increased demand for training. We also need to improve and build infrastructure.

You can help by connecting us with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) teams. We have several projects which are awaiting funds for implementation. To know more or share contact details, please mail us at prabhu.loganathan@ishavidhya.org or call Prabhu at +94890 45045.

We have several other volunteering opportunities. To know about them, please register* as a Friend of Isha Vidhya .

*The registration process will take less than a minute.
